LEAD: Political novice Nandan sets up date with Lord Of The Ring Ananth Kumar in LS polls

Speaking to reporters after filing the nomination, he said he stands a chance to win the elections as people's response was highly positive.
Bangalore, March 21 (PTI) Infosys co-founder and Congress candidate Nandan Nilekani was among the 35 candidates who plunged into the electoral battle on the third day of filing of nominations for Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka.

In all, 85 candidates have filed nominations since the process began for the single-phase April 17 polls, Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha told reporters here.

Except Chamrajanagar, all 27 remaining constituencies have witnessed filing of nominations, Jha said.

Nilekani, who a day before entering the fray declared that he and his wife have assets worth Rs 7,700 crore, filed his nominations for the Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency, where he is locked in a tough battle against five-time MP BJP’s Ananth Kumar.

Speaking to reporters after filing the nomination, Nilekani said he stands a chance to win the elections as people’s response to his campaign was highly positive.

A one-time close associate of former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Dhananjay Kumar who joined JDS yesterday, filed his nomination for Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, where he is pitted against BJP's Shobha Karandlaje.

Former Minister Gulihatti Shekhar, who lost the May 5 Assembly polls last year, filed nomination for Chitradurga constituency on JDS ticket.

State BJP Vice President G M Siddeshwara, who is a member of the 15th Lok Sabha, filed his nomination for Davanagere constituency.

Prakash Rathod, former MLC, filed his papers from Bijapur constituency.

Jha said election officials have seized Rs 47 lakh and Rs 26 lakh from Byatarayanapura here and Chamarajnagar, respectively.

Also 275 sarees and ten boxes of sarees were seized from Chamarajnagar and Bellary constituencies, Jha said. Ten boxes of wall-clocks being transported to Andhra Pradesh, were also seized, Jha said.

The last date for filing nominations is March 26.

Scrutiny of papers will be taken up the next day. March 29 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
