IPL 2014: Smith, Faulkner steal thunder from Yuvraj's superlative show

By B D Narayankar

Bangalore, May 11 (PTI) In an incredible power-hitting show, Steven Smith and James Faulkner rattled up a match-winning 85-run stand from no where as Rajasthan Royals pulled off a stunning five-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chasing a daunting 191 to win, Rajasthan were staring down the barrel after losing five wickets for 106 runs in the 14th over but Smith (48 off 21) and Faulkner (41 off 17) combined well to find boundary after boundary.

In complete mayhem, the Australian duo scored the last 65 runs off just 17 balls to not only secure the win with seven balls to spare but also steal the thunder from Yuvraj Singh, who had roared back to form with a strokeful 83 and followed it up with four wickets.

It all started in the 17th over as Faulkner creamed two fours and a six off fellow Australian Mitchel Starc. Smith began the next over, bowled by Ashoke Dinda, with a six and two shots to the fence. Faulkner then finished it off quickly in the 19th over, punishing Varun Aaron with two sixes and a four, stunning the RCB camp and the home fans.

With this win, Rajasthan have strengthened their position in the top-four although they remained in third position with 10 points. RCB are still at sixth place with six points. Bangalore owed their big total to Yuvraj and AB de Villiers (58) as they shared a magnificent 132-run stand, which powered RCB to 190 for five after electing to bat.

Yuvraj, who was dropped on 47 by Sanju Samson, and de Villiers put up a gallant fight as RCB scored 84 runs in the last five overs to snatch the momentum from their rivals, who were well in command till 12 overs. Sending the Rajasthan bowlers on a leather-hunt, the hosts belted 120 runs in the last eight overs.

Rajasthan too had to endure a bad start as Yuvraj rocked the visitors' middle-order with his spin, starting the rot with the important wicket of skipper Shane Watson (1). The left-armer also scalped Rajasthan's top scorer Karun Nair (56), Stuart Binny (1) and the talented Sanju Samson (13) to end with figures of 4-0-35-4. Rajasthan were reeling at 106 for five in the 14th over but what followed was complete mayhem.

From nowhere, Smith with Faulkner, changed the game with their amazing ability to bat under pressure. Smith played a blinder, scoring 48 off 21 balls with four sixes and as many fours while Faulkner hit three sixes and three fours in his 17-ball knock.

Yuvraj, who received criticism for his slow batting and failures in this IPL, punished the bowlers with seven fours and seven sixes in 38-ball knock.

De Villiers, who has been the most consistent batsman for RCB this season, continued with his splendid form and hit five sixes and a four. Yuvraj and de Villiers tried to outdo each other in hitting fours and sixes towards the end of the innings after RCB had a disastrous start, losing three wickets for 40 runs in 8.1 overs.

The RCB innings was off to a disastrous start after their captain Virat Kohli, who opened the innings instead of Parthiv Patel, returned to the dugout cheaply in the third over. Kohli tried to smash the ball over extra-cover but got a thick edge that went into the hands of Rajat Bhatia stationed at third man off Kane Richardson.

Chris Gayle, who is yet to get a big score under his belt in this IPL, started his innings sedately but shifted gears by smashing two boundaries in Pravin Tambe's first over, which went for nine runs. However, in the next over, the oldest IPL player had the last laugh, snaring Gayle with a googly after he had made 19 off 25 balls with three boundaries.

Vijay Zol, who played his first match of the season, made 16 runs off 14 balls with three boundaries, before he thick edged right-arm legbreak bowler Rahul Tewatia's wrong one to Watson standing in first slip.

Every team has a chance to comeback in India leg of IPL: Yuvraj Singh

B D Narayankar reports

Bangalore, May 2 (PTI) Senior Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh today said though Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings are sitting at top of the table, the seventh edition of IPL is still wide open and there is chance for every team to stage a comeback.

"This is the time when teams leading would like to consolidate, teams like ours` would like to recover the lost ground and sides like Mumbai Indians would like to change their fortunes. As far as my experience says, everything is possible in this game," he said in an article on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) website.

The Punjab southpaw said the Bangalore outfit believe they can be return back to winning ways if they play to their potential and use home conditions to their advantage.

"We know this for a fact, that if we play to our full potential, we can be back to winning ways. Everyone in the group believes this very strongly and are aspiring to make things better. And that`s what we aim to do when we get back to Bangalore," he said.

"Before getting back to Bangalore, we have two days to recharge our batteries and channelise our energies. Hopefully, the familiar surroundings of our home ground can make this recovery a little easier," he added. Yuvraj, who has had a rough time the last couple of matches, said the team need to overcome from their last three defats in the UAE leg of the tournament.
"Losing three matches in a row is definitely a setback, which we need to overcome very quickly. We had one terrible game against Rajasthan Royals and the other two games we just didn`t play the crucial moments well," he said.

Yuvraj said RCB has plenty of positives, including the right set-up and right combination of talents. "Honestly speaking, we have plenty of them. We have the right set-up, right players, great support staff and a very sporting franchise," he said.

"In this format, you lose and win your battles in a very short span and unlike Test cricket or One-Day cricket, you don`t have many chances to make a comeback," the Punjab lad added.

"We started this year`s IPL on a right note with two consecutive wins. Though, by the end of the first leg of the IPL, we somehow couldn`t carry forward that initiative."

Woman techie killed, 14 injured

PTI Chennai Bureau

Chennai, May 1 (PTI) A 24-year old woman techie was killed
and 14 others injured when a twin bomb blast rocked the
Bangalore-Guwhati Express at the busy Central Railway station
in the city today.
The two low-intensity bombs that went off in quick
succession in S4 and S5 coaches about ten minutes after the
train chugged into the platform in the morning, triggered of
chaotic scenes with panic stricken passengers running for
safety.
The woman killed in the mishap has been identified as
Swathi, employed with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in
Bangalore, and was travelling to her home town Guntur in
Andhra Pradesh along with a friend, police said.
Fourteen injured persons, including two critically wounded,
were undergoing treatment at the state-run Rajiv Gandhi
General Hospital where doctors described their condition as
"out of danger".
Police cordoned off the platform where the explosion
occurred, rushed forensic experts, bomb disposal squads and
sniffer dogs to look for clues and the Tamil Nadu Government
transferred the investigation to its specialised wing CB-CID.
The ill-fated train continued its onward journey after
railway authorities replaced three damaged coaches while other
trains were being operated as scheduled after a brief
disruption, railway officials said.
The police are probing all angles including whether the
bomb was planted after the train entered the city railway
station or elsewhere, a police official refusing to be
identified said.
The CB-CID sleuths who have already plunged into the
probe have detained three coaches of the train, collected
pellets found on the scene and other materials, sources said.
The Tamil Nadu police have alerted railway authorities at
various stations from Bangalore to Chennai to look for CCTV
footages for suspects and also the point at which the
explosive material gained entry into the train, sources said.
Two persons who were travelling by the train have been
detained for questioning, police said but refused to reveal
further details.
State DGP K Ramanujam who visited the mishap site said,"
It is a minor blast. It is suspected that Chennai could not
have been target of those who were behind the blast because
the train was running late. Some other location could have
been the target".
"It is premature to say what kind of device was used in the
blast. Damage to the train is not heavy," he added.
DGP (Elections) Anoop Jaiswal said, "We are picking up
clues and any speculation on this is too premature. Nobody has
been arrested so far", he said.
A source in CB-CID said the materials collected from the
explosion site has been sent to forensic laboratory for
analysis and declined to share details of the probe involving
multiple agencies including the Railway police.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts,
which occurred two days after the arrest of a terror suspect
hailing from Sri Lanka and believed to have links with Indian
terror modules.
The floor surface of the two coaches was ripped apart under
the impact of the explosion, but the side walls and the
ceiling did not suffer any damage.
Police ruled out the use of gelatin sticks, which were
involved in some blasts in the past in the state, and suspect
"the triggering device could have been anything including a
mobile phone".
The Union Home Ministry was preparing to send teams of the
National Investigation Agency, National Security Guard and
forensic experts to Chennai, but put on hold the plan after
Tamil Nadu Government refused to take any help, saying its
police was well equipped to handle the blast probe.
The authorities have enlarged security cover and beefed up
vigil at airports, railway and bus terminus across the state,
besides at key installations following the blasts.
The explosions evoked strong condemnation from various
leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief
Minister J Jayalalithaa and DMK chief M Karunanidhi
among others.
Singh condemned the blasts, saying such "barbaric acts"
highlight the "desperation and cowardice" of those responsible
and asserted that no efforts would be spared in bringing the
perpetrators to justice.
Jayalalithaa, in a quick response, ordered CB-CID probe
into the blasts and announced Rs one lakh ex-gratia to the
family of the deceased, besides Rs 50,000 each to the
grievously wounded and Rs 25,000 to those with minor injuries.
Railway Minister M Mallikarjun Kharge expressed shock
over the blasts and declared Rs one lakh ex-gratia to the
family of the woman, who had joined the TCS only four months
and was to have got married in two months.
He also announced Rs 25,000 immediate relief to seriously
injured and Rs 5,000 to those with minor injuries.
Commissioner Railway Safety (southern circle) S K Mittal
will also conduct an inquiry into the incident, Railway
Spokesperson Anil Saxena said.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, currently campaigning in
Himachal Pradesh  said, "I have directed my officials to
provide all assistance to the state government".

Bangalore to host India-Serbia World Group play-off tie

PTI New Delhi Bureau

New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) India will face off with
formidable Serbia in the Davis Cup World Group play-off tie in
Bangalore, it was announced today.
The AITA officials also discussed Delhi as a venue for
the crucial play-off tie, to be held from September 12-14, but
on the insistence of the players Bangalore was finally
selected to host the matches.
It was in Bangalore that India thrashed Indonesia 5-0
last year.
"We consulted the captain and also the players before
deciding the host city. Maybe the players like the slow courts
there, so they wanted matches in Bangalore," Bharat Oza, AITA
Secretary General, told PTI.
India defeated Korea 3-1 in an away Asia/Oceania Group I
second round tie to reach the play-off stage while Serbia lost
2-3 to Switzerland in the World Group first round.
The last time India and Serbia clashed was in 2011 when
the visitors lost 1-4 in Novi Sad.
It will be humongous task for the struggling Indian side
to contain a team, which has top-class players such as World
No.2 Novak Djokovic in its ranks.

Govt plans revival of slew of infra projects: Baig

B D Narayankar reports

Bangalore, April 24 (PTI) The Karnataka government is planning to revive a slew of infrastructure projects, including high-speed rail network and an international convention centre near Kempegowda International Airport near Devanahalli.

The government also plans to revive the construction of film city at Hesaraghatta and introduce uniform ticket rates at multiplexes on the lines of the system in Tamil Nadu, Infrastructure Minister Roshan Baig told reporters here.

He said government is exploring high speed rail connectivity across Karnataka for decongesting important cities and towns. "The high speed rail project is being explored to connect Bangalore-Mysore, Bangalore-Kolar, Bangalore-Hubli and other important towns to solve the problem of decongestion."

Baig also said an international convention centre on 35 acres will soon come up near Kempegowda International Airport at Devanahalli for holding international conferences, seminars and meetings by corporate houses.

Of the 419 acres of government land near the airport, 35 acres will be allotted for the project, Baig said. The centre will also house budget and five-star hotels, he added.

The proposal was made by Department of Tourism in 2007 and the estimated cost of constructing the convention centre at present is Rs 500 crore and may go up Rs 600 crore.

The Minister also said the government plans to revive the construction of film city at Hesaraghatta. "I am visiting Hesarghatta tomorrow and take an initiative to reclaim government land for the purpose," he said.

The Devaraj Urs government allocated 360 acres of land in the 60s for developing a film city. No attempts were made by the crisis-ridden Kannada film industry for all these years. He said government plans to encourage international players to set up hightech studios at Hesaraghatta.

He said government planned to introduce uniform ticket rates at multiplexes on the lines of the system in Tamil Nadu. He flayed multiplexes for charging exorbitant rates and said, "If Tamil Nadu has a policy for the theaters, why can't we? We will stop this looting by the multiplexes."

In Tamil Nadu, ticket prices are controlled by the government, with a cap on the maximum rate at Rs 120. Tickets for two front rows are sold at Rs 10. "At least multiplexes can reduce eatable prices, which are exorbitant."

The government is also planning to set up Janata theaters under PPP model to encourage screening of Kannada films, Baig said.

Malaysian police to probe sabotage in MH192 emergency landing

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 21 (PTI) Malaysian police on Monday said they will probe if there was any sabotage behind the emergency landing of a Bangalore-bound flight carrying 166 people on board.

The Malaysia Airlines Flight MH192 turned back early this morning following a tyre burst and faulty landing gear.

Investigations would be carried out to see if there were elements of sabotage on the plane, inspector general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said while responding to acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein's call for the police to conduct an investigation.

The Boeing 737-800 – carrying 159 passengers and seven crew members – was en route to Bangalore from here when it made the emergency landing.

The Malaysia Airlines said in a statement that the turn back was because "one of the tyres on the right hand main landing gear burst during takeoff. The Captain was alerted by Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control that tyre debris were found on the runway and immediately contacted Malaysia Airlines Operations Control Centre (OCC) at 10:25pm."

"As safety is of utmost priority to Malaysia Airlines, the aircraft was required to turn back to KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport)," it said.

The Airport Fire Rescue Services (AFRS) were deployed as soon as the pilot was instructed to turn back to the airport by Operations Control Centre (OCC).

"All 159 passengers and 7 crew members on board have disembarked from the aircraft. MH192 will be re-timed to depart KLIA at 3.30pm on 21 April 2014 and arrive Bangalore at 5.00pm the same day," the statement said.
The people on board the plane were unharmed as the plane landed safely at KLIA around 1.56am (local time). The flight had departed at 10.09pm (local time) last night, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) tweeted.

The jet was scheduled to arrive in Bangalore at 11.35 pm IST on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin praised the pilot of the plane for his "skillful" handling of the aircraft.

"The passengers, despite being tired, expressed their admiration for the pilot's skillful handling of the aircraft in making the emergency landing safe (at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport) without any harm to the passengers," he said and placed a pilot's cap on Nor Adam Azmi's head as a gesture of appreciation.
